Discover the South West of Scotland by driving the incredible SWC300 route. Experience stunning coastline, starry skies and historic sites, plus beautiful beaches, quirky eateries and incredible castles. There is something for everyone on this amazing road trip! We started the route from Alloway in South Ayrshire and made our way around the route anti clockwise. For the exact route check out the Visit South West Scotland website and without further ado, here are our must see spots on the SWC300 road trip in Scotland.
Start your Swc300 road trip in Alloway, the birthplace of Robert Burns, Scotland’s national poet. Here you can check out the Robert Burns cottage and the Robert Burns monument. Whilst visiting the momunment check out the beautiful gardens of the Brig o’ Doon hotel.
Next stop by the Coo Shed for a milkshake at their quirky milkshake vending machine. Choose from different flavours such as strawberry and salted caramel. They cost £4 and come in a branded glass bottle. Pretty cool!
Don’t miss the impressive Culzean Castle which is perched on the Ayrshire cliffs. Take a stroll around it’s gorgeous gardens and large country park.
Also check out the beautiful seaside village of Portpatrick. We’d recommend grabbing a coffee from The Port Pantry and enjoying a walk along the harbour.
Stop by Port Logan for it’s beautiful white sand beach.
Drive down the Rhins of Galloway peninsula to the most southern point of mainland Scotland. Here you can check out the Mull of Galloway Lighthouse and enjoy beautiful views over the water. On a clear day you can even spot the Isle of Man in the distance.
If you’re a book fan you have to stop by the charming town of Wigtown, named Scotland’s National book town. Treat yourself to a book from one of its many book stores.
And now for the Gin fans… check out the quirky Crafty Distillery in Newton Stewart, which is the home of Hills & Harbour Gin. You can book a tour for £20 or simply stop by to visit their gift shop.
For a delicious meal with gorgeous sea views, visit Gather at Laggan. Their stylish restaurant is a perfect spot for brunch, we recommend the nutella pancakes or the full breakfast. Also check out their stunning outdoor terrace with heated seats for drinks.
Don’t miss the gorgeous Drumlanrig Castle, a 17th Century Renaissance building in Dumfries and Galloway. You can park up and explore the grounds or pay entry into the castle.
The Mennock Pass is an incredible road to drive on the way up to Wanlockhead, Scotland’s highest village. The winding road weaves its way through the hills, eventually revealing the former lead mining village.
Visit the Galloway Forest Dark Sky Park for incredible clear and starry skies (if you have the right conditions). You can also book the Scottish Dark Sky Observatory to enjoy the starry sky through their large telescopes.
