If you are looking for the top things to experience in New Orleans then look no further! This post covers our top recommendations from experiencing a ghost tour to trying the famous Cajun/Creole cuisine.
1. the french quarter
Explore the French quarter including Bourbon street, Royal street and Jackson square. Bourbon street, the most famous street in New Orleans, is a 24 hour party street which is pretty rowdy. It’s not for everyone and personally we preferred to stay on the streets surrounding. We recommend exploring Royal street and the streets surrounding Jackson Square. These streets are lined with the most beautiful buildings which house restaurants, shops and art galleries. Day or night there is always something new to see!
2. the Bayou
The only thing as famous as Bourbon Street in New Orleans is the Bayou, a large swampland. Book a day trip to see the Alligators and enjoy the peacefulness away from the hustle and bustle of the city. You can opt to experience the Bayou by airboat or by boat cruise. The amount of alligators you can spot will surprise you!
3. A WITCHES, VOODOO AND VAMPIRE TOUR
If like us, you loved the tv shows The Vampire Diaries and The Originals, booking a creepy tour in the French Quarter is a must! We would highly recommend the Witches, Voodoo and Vampire walking tour with Witches Brew Tours. We booked this through Viator and it was definitely a highlight of our trip. We’d also recommend booking an evening tour so it’s dark and adds to the eerie atmosphere. P.S. if you are visiting New Orleans and haven’t watched these tv shows get watching now! You won’t be disappointed.
4. THE GARDEN DISTRICT
Ride the St. Charles streetcar – which happens to be the oldest still operating in the world – to visit the Garden District. This area is a lavish residential neighbourhood on the outskirts of the city, which is home to many historic mansions. You can get on and off the streetcar and explore areas or like us just opt to sit back and enjoy the ride.
5. tHE CUISINE
New Orleans is famous for its Cajun/Creole cuisine as well as other unique foods. We recommend tasting Gumbo, Beignets and Jambalaya. Check out our where to eat in New Orleans blog for more.
