Flying a drone in Scotland is a dream because of it’s vast landscapes and breathtaking castles. The perspective of the drone gives a whole other insight into Scotland’s beauty. Therefore we have compiled a list of 8 cool drone photography spots in Scotland. Please note to fly a drone in Scotland you must have a valid operator ID from the Civil Aviation Authority (short online test and £9 fee, click here for more info). Also please check the rules of each place before flying, the rules may have changed from when we were last there!

1. Glen Etive

Buachaille Etive Mòr is the most beautiful munro at the tip of Glen Etive. This whole area is so open and amazing for flying the drone. In general it’s a photographer’s paradise!

2. Prince Albert's cairn

Prince Albert’s Cairn (also known as the Balmoral Pyramid) can be accessed via the Cairn walk on the Balmoral Estate. A drone shot here is amazing for capturing the scale of the Pyramid in comparison to the woodlands. It is especially beautiful when the heather is in full bloom during late summer.

3. Eilean Donan castle

The hauntingly beautiful Eilean Donan Castle sits proudly on a tidal island where three lochs meet. It’s one of Scotland’s most iconic castles and therefore also the most photographed. Drone photography therefore is the best opportunity to capture something unique here.

4. dunnottar castle

Dunnottar Castle is a ruined fortress located on a dramatic cliff top. The setting of the medieval fortress is mesmerising with the sound of the seabirds and the waves crashing off the rocks. Flying the drone here is the best way to capture the incredible setting and the scale of these ruins.

5. Bealach na Bà

The road to Applecross, known as Bealach na Bà, is out of this world. In our opinion it’s perhaps the most beautiful road in Scotland. The winding 5 mile road reaches a height of 2,053 feet with beautiful views over to the Isle of Raasay. It’s insane to fly the drone here and see the winding road from above.

6. Arisaig

A true gem of the Scottish Highlands is the wonderful Arisiag Beach, which you will struggle to believe is in Scotland with its white sand and turquoise waters. You won’t believe just how clear the water is until you fly your drone here.

7. new slains Castle

New Slains Castle sits on the beautiful coast of Cruden Bay. The ruins are believed to be the inspiration for the setting of Dracula – which we think is pretty cool. What is not a particularly impressive castle from the ground is beautiful and mesmerising from above with the waves crashing off the cliffs. Viewing it from above definitely brings it to life as there is no roof on the castle which allows you to see the entire floor plan and design.

8. Three lochs forest drive

The Three Lochs Forest drive is a 7 mile scenic route which passes 3 beautiful lochs – Lochan Reòidhte, Loch Drunkie and Loch Achray. This epic forest drive truly comes alive when seen from above as you can see the twisting dirt track roads through the woodlands and the mountains in the background.
