Here are the best things to do in Ho Chi Minh City from eating at the Ben Thanh street food market to visiting the city’s iconic landmarks.
When a lot of people think of Vietnam they don’t think of a country, they unfortunately think of a war. Throughout the country there are many reminders of this infamous period. There are many war related sites throughout the country however we would recommend visiting the War Remnants museum. We must warn you that it is very sadenning but also extremely thought provoking.
We found Ho Chi Minh City to have the most modern and hip dining options in Vietnam. The Ben Thanh street food market is a quirky spot with bold and colourful murals and a great variety of food stands. From Indian cuisine to nutella pizza, there is something for everyone.
The cafe apartments is another cool place to eat, shop and explore. It’s actually one of the most unique places we have come across! The apartments originally housed American military officers during the war and have now been converted to beautiful cafes, restaurants and boutiques. The businesses here are operating illegally and with the government issuing notices of eviction they may not be there for long. It’s hard to believe these businesses are operating illegally when they are so well presented and the food is so good!
We highly recommend the Downtown Steakhouse and Dosh Donuts for delicious food, coffee and donuts.
Pho is a popular Vietnamese street food dish served in many restaurants. It is a Vietnamese soup of broth, thin noodles, herbs and meat. The meal also comes with many garnishes on the side to increase the spice. The best part in our opinion is the fried dough sticks (quay) that compliment the dish. So be sure to add these when ordering. Luckily for us our Airbnb accommodation was situated above a Pho restaurant called Pho 1954. We would highly recommend trying it there.
Ho Chi Minh City is home to many historic landmarks and French colonial architecture. For example the city’s very own Notre Dame Cathedral and the Saigon Central Post Office. We would also recommend checking out the very beautiful and very pink Tan Dinh church.
The Cafe Terrace coffee shop in the Saigon shopping centre looks like a magical garden. It has huge bird cages where you can enjoy a nice cup of coffee and admire your surroundings.
