Falkirk and the surrounding areas boast some of the most amazing modern and historical attractions in Scotland. Situated right in the centre between Edinburgh and Glasgow, its the perfect place to explore on your doorstep. From one-of-a-kind sculptures like The Kelpies to Outlander film locations such as Blackness Castle, there is something for everyone when visiting Falkirk. What to do:

Explore Blackness Castle

The amazing Blackness Castle is located in Linlithgow, just outside Falkirk. The 15th century castle looks like a ship from the seaward side and is really impressive with lots of nooks and crannies to explore. We loved exploring and imagining how each area would have looked furnished in times gone by. In recent years the castle has featured in films and tv shows including Outlander. The castle was used in the series to represent Fort William. During filming large props, such as cannons, had to be lifted over the walls by cranes as they couldn’t fit through the castles narrow entrances.

When visiting Blackness Castle be sure to stop by the quirky pub The Lobster Pot for a cup of coffee or dinner.

Visit the Kelpies

The majestic Kelpies are one of the coolest spots in the country, created by Scotland’s leading sculptor Andy Scott. In Scottish folklore, a Kelpie is the name given to a shape-changing creature found in Scottish waters, usually in the form of a horse. Many waters in Scotland have an associated Kelpie story, the most famous being the Loch Ness monster tale. They also stand as a monument to Central Scotland’s horse powered heritage.  The area is great for a wander or you can even book a tour and go inside one of the Kelpies.

Explore Callendar House

Callendar House is a beautiful 14th century French chateau styled house filled with fantastic exhibits, a lovely tea room and another Outlander filming location. Outlander fans will recognise this fantastic Georgian kitchen from season 2.

Check out the Falkirk Tunnel

Almost 200 years old and originally used to transport coal, the Falkirk Tunnel is a cool spot which now carries the Union Canal. The tunnel has an upgraded lighting system to highlight the Victorian engineering.

Visit Bo'ness and Kinneil Railway

The Bo’ness and Kinneil Heritage railway station is home to Scotland’s largest railway museum. You can watch for steam trains or even board one for a scenic 10 mile return journey along the Forth Estuary.

Explore The Dunmore Pineapple

The Dunmore Pineapple is a quirky summer house built in the 18th century in the shape of a pineapple. The unique home is now owned by the National Trust and can be booked as holiday home for 4 guests.

Check out the falkirk wheel

The Falkirk Wheel is one of Scotland’s most iconic landmarks and is an engineering marvel. The Wheel was constructed to reunite the Forth & Clyde and Union Canals. The previous link was a system of 11 locks that took nearly an entire day to transit. These locks were dismantled in 1933 leaving the route disconnected until The Wheel opening in 2002. This system now allows people to transit in a staggering time of just 4 minutes. The Wheel is a great day out with lots to do including the boat ride, water activities and mini golf.

Visit Kinneil House and Estate

Kinneil House is a historic country house with renaissance art. The house is surrounded by woodland and even remains of the Roman Antonine Wall. The grounds are open to wander or you can book a tour to see inside.

Where to eat:

Christie's Tapas

Enjoy delicious Scottish style tapas at Christie’s Tapas in the heart of Falkirk. We highly recommend the Haggis Bon Bons, Sticky Irn-Bru Wings, Camembert & Cherry Tomato Melting Pot, Loaded Hoose Chips with Haggis & Pepper sauce and the Lockerbie Mac & Cheese. Everything was absolutely delicious.

Richmond Park Hotel

If you fancy an afternoon tea check out the lovely Comhla Lounge at the Richmond Park Hotel. We particularly enjoyed the scones and Irn-Bru cheesecake.
