From the Harry Potter train bridge to the University campus that inspired Hogwarts, visiting Scotland for Harry Potter fans is a must! Enjoy the magical filming locations across the country. Plus visit the places that inspired J.K. Rowling when writing the books.
Number 1 on your list should be the magical Glenfinnan Viaduct, which is the iconic filming location of the Hogwarts Express. Twice a day you can watch the Jacobite steam train ride across the bridge. Or even better, you can actually ride the train and pretend you are on your way to Hogwarts. For more information on the Jacobite steam train click here.
Top tip: Arrive early to get a good spot as high as possible to view the train from as it does get really crowded. We’d recommend you arrive at the car park around 45 minutes before the estimated train arrival time.
When visiting the Glenfinnan Viaduct you can also check out Loch Shiel across the road which featured as Hogwarts Lake in the Harry Potter films. You may recognise this spot from the Triwizard Tournament or from Dumbeldore’s final resting place.
Around just over an hours drive from Glenfinnan you can visit Glencoe, a hauntingly beautiful location in the West Scottish Highlands which is home to Hagrid’s hut in the Prisoner of Azkaban movie. Whilst the hut was built there solely for filming purposes, you can still visit the backdrop and surrounding scenery of the hut.
Top tip: Set your sat nav to the Three Sisters car park so you can step out the car and take in the scenery. For the exact location where they filmed Hagrid’s hut check out the Clachaig Inn.
Alongside George Heriot’s school in Edinburgh, the Glasgow University Campus is rumoured to be J. K. Rowling’s inspiration for Hogwarts. You can definitely imagine wizards roaming the campus. Don’t miss the University’s iconic cloisters which give off magical vibes.
Top Tip: Visit at the weekend our during summer as there will be less students around. If you want to see the fairy lights at the cloisters visit during the festive season.
Edinburgh is of course the place where Harry Potter began and should be on every fans itinerary. You can visit the Elephant House coffee shop, which is today known as the birth place of the phenomenon as it was where J. K. Rowling began writing the books. Don’t miss the colourful Victoria street which served as the inspiration behind Diagon Alley with its narrow, quirky stores. Also visit Greyfriars kirk, where you can spot Tom Riddles grave and just wandering the cobbled streets of the Old Town gives off all sorts of HP vibes.
Top Tip: You can book an Airbnb tour in the city to visit the Harry Potter spots all in one.
