ATTENTION OUTLANDER FANS! Are you looking to discover the Outlander filming locations in Scotland and wondering where to find them? Look no further! We have picked out some of our favourite filming spots in and will share where they are and all the information you need to know. Warning – this post contains spoilers!
DRUMMOND CASTLE GARDENS
(THE GARDENS OF VERSAILLES)
The gardens of Drummond Castle double as the Parisian Gardens of Versailles in Season 2. This is the spot Claire and Jamie come face to face again with Randall amidst lavish Parisian fashion and French aristocracy. The gardens are truly breathtaking due to their symmetry and beautiful colours.

MIDHOPE CASTLE
(LALLYBROCH)
Midhope Castle has featured as Lallybroch in every season so far as the home of Jamie and Claire. We definitely think this is the most iconic Outlander filming location we have visited so far that fans would definitely recognise. It’s so cool to see in real life, however it’s important to know you can’t visit inside the castle.
Things to note:
- Located in South Queensferry
- Entry costs £3.50
- You can’t visit out with opening times due to the gates being locked

CULROSS
(Cranesmuir)
Culross was used in season 1 as the filming location for Cranesmuir where Geillis Duncan’s home was. A fun fact that we love, is that the town was actually painted a dark grey for filming and reverted back to it’s original white afterwards. Culross really is a cute and colourful town which we recommend visiting even if you haven’t seen the series.
Things to note:
- Located in Fife
- No entrance fee
- Other filming locations to visit nearby include Linlithgow Palace (Wentworth Prison) and Blackness Castle (Fort William)
THE DEVIL’S PULPIT
(THE LIAR’S SPRING)
In season 1 the Devil’s Pulpit is the filming location of the Liar’s Spring where Claire drinks the running water in order for Duncan to believe she is telling the truth. For us this was the filming spot which blew us away the most, it definitely feels like something from a fairytale! The Devil’s Pulpit (also known as Finnich Glen) is actually a 100 ft deep, moss-covered gorge, where a river runs through over red sandstone making the water appear red like blood (hence it’s name).
Things to note:
- The exact location is quite difficult to pin point. Once you have parked and reach the information board, head up towards the fence of the farm. Walk alongside the fence for 5 minutes and you then should spot the steps on your left
- This is also not the easiest spot to get down to, the stairs feel pretty dangerous so please visit with caution and wear appropriate footwear
- Entry is free
- If you’d feel safer you can visit as part of a tour, check it out on Airbnb experiences.
Glasgow University
(Harvard university)
In season’s 3 and 4, the beautiful Glasgow University campus doubles as Harvard University. In season 3 the campus is used as Frank’s workplace and in season 4 the scene of Brianna and Roger is filmed at the University’s Cloisters.
Things to note:
- Located in Glasgow
- Entry is free and you can visit any day of the week during opening hours
- For any Harry Potter fans reading this… the campus is also supposedly J. K. Rowling’s inspiration behind Hogwarts
Glasgow Cathedral
(L'Hopital des Anges)
In season 2 the medieval Glasgow Cathedral featured as the 1740’s fictional Parisian hospital where Claire volunteers. The Cathedral is actually the oldest building in Glasgow dating back to the mid-1200s.

- Located in Glasgow
- Entry is free

THE COATS MEMORIAL
(TO BE DETERMINED in season 5)
So we know for a fact the Outlander cast were here filming for season 5 as we did a drive by at 5am to confirm it. So we are yet to know when or why this impressive church will feature but it definitely should when the next season airs. We can’t wait to see this spot on screen as it’s very close to home for us.
