Driving in scotland can seem quite daunting, especially if you are from a country who drives on the opposite side of the road. So here are our local tips for driving in Scotland.
1. In the UK we drive on the left hand side of the road.
2. Chances are you will encounter many single-track roads but don’t worry there are plenty of passing places but you just have to stay alert, they can creep up out of nowhere.
3. It is common courtesy to thank people by raising your hand (for example if someone has stopped for you at a passing place).
4. On country roads you’ll see a sign (white circle with black diagonal line) which represents the national speed limit – 60mph on single carriageways and 70mph on dual carriageways. Towns are usually 30mph. Click here for more information on speed limits.
5. You cannot drink alcohol and drive – the law is very strict.
6. If renting a car be sure to request an automatic if that’s what you are used to as most cars here are manual.
7. When overtaking a cyclist it’s the law to the leave a 1.5m gap when safe to do so.
8. If riding on a motorcycle it is legal to filter through traffic.
9. We would advise getting a sat nav as you will struggle to get reception on your phone in a lot of the countryside.
10. Watch out for animals on the road. Sheep, cows, deer, bunnies and grouse are all common.
Bonus tip: make sure you know how to work the window wipers (you are going to need them haha).
