The amount of quirky things to do in Tokyo is endless as it’s such a weird and wonderful city. Read about visiting a bizarre maid cafe and exploring the streets of Akihabara.
Watch the Shibuya crossing madness
First of all, Shibuya is perhaps the most famous area in Tokyo which you have to visit. Like the rest of the city, it comes alive at night with lights as far, and as high, as the eye can see. No trip to Tokyo would be complete without visiting the iconic Shibuya crossing where hundreds of people cross every few minutes. It’s amazing how so many people can avoid each other walking in every direction every time the lights turn. We recommend visiting the second floor of Starbucks on the corner for the best view.
Experience the weird and wonderful HARAJUKU
Harajuku is such a fun and colourful area of Tokyo. We recommend visiting Takeshita street, the main tourist drag, which is full of quirky stores, eateries and crepe stands.
For a real unique Harajuku experience visit the Kawaii Monster Cafe, where “monster girls” serve you and perform. You can expect a colourful and fun menu. For example, they serve dishes such as multi coloured spaghetti and chocolate covered chicken. We ordered the melty pancake and the teriyaki bowl.
Get lost in AKIHABARA
Known as the Electric Town, the Akihabara area is famous for maid cafes, gaming stores and anime/manga shops. Visit Yodobashi Camera which is a store that sells everything from £25,000 watches to £1 face masks. It’s a giant megastore with 9 floors and basically sells everything so it’s fun to browse. It even has a golf driving range on the top floor.
Again speaking of quirky things to do in Tokyo, if you are looking for a bizarre one of a kind experience visit a maid cafe. This was possibly the most bizarre experience of our lives. A maid cafe is basically a cosplay restaurant (we think, we are still very much confused by the whole experience). We choose Maidreamin. Expect to be given headwear which you must wear. For example, cat ears or a maid headpiece. You can also expect to do some weird things you’d never imagine you would such as silly dances and meowing. Yes meowing. It’s hilarious!
In this area we would also highly recommend you visit Go Go Curry and order the katsu curry. It’s the best we’ve ever tasted.
Experience the TOKYO TOWER
You can opt to go up the Tokyo Tower for 900 yen ($8) or like us you can opt to go somewhere with a view of it. We’d recommend experiencing it from a rooftop bar. We visited the Sky Lounge Stellar Garden Rooftop bar and the view was breathtaking. It really felt like you where inside the skyline as you could see the view all around you. Shiba Park is another great place to view the tower day or night.
Be a kid at Tokyo DISNEYLAND
Finally, if like us you can’t pass up an opportunity to go to the most magical place in the world, you’ll have to visit Disneyland Tokyo. The park layout is very similar to Disneyland Paris and so is not a large as Orlando and more manageable in a day. Visitors here really take their costumes seriously and so many people are dressed up its hard to tell who is employed and who is not. It’s magical!
