There are so many unique things to do in Bangkok. We often hear people say they didn’t enjoy Bangkok and for us that’s crazy, as it is one of our favourite places ever! We feel that maybe people only visit the major tourist attractions and streets, when really there is so much more to explore. Whilst we did enjoy visiting the temples and floating markets, we know it’s not for everyone. We were definitely not the biggest fans of places like Khao San Road, but Bangkok is huge and with so many areas to stay in we didn’t have to go anywhere near it again. So here are our recommendations on unique things to do in the city.

1. visit the CHANG CHUI PLANE MARKET

We have been raving about this place ever since we visited, it is literally the coolest place ever! First off you can walk around and appreciate all the art projects. Then indulge at all the delicious street food carts, before listening to live music and exploring the crafty shops. It’s one of those places you want to take a picture of absoloutely everything you see, even the toilets! We can see why Time magazine listed it as 1 of their top 100 greatest places to experience in world.

2. Stay somewhere with a rooftop pool

One of the things that will make you fall in love with Bangkok is it’s amazing skyline and what better way to enjoy it than from a rooftop pool at sunset. There are loads of stunning hotels and Airbnb’s with wonderful rooftop pools. However, we can personally recommend the DoubleTree Hilton Sukhumvit and this Airbnb shown below.

3. visit a quirky cinema

If you are big cinema/films fans like us, you have to visit the Emprive’ Cineclub at the Emporium shopping mall. The cinema is perhaps a pretty universal experience but we like the little differences that make this cinema experience unique. Expect a double couch to sit on and cosy blankets to keep you warm. Also, out of respect you will have to stand up for the national anthem before the movie starts. You should also make sure you choose a film in English if you visit or at least with subtitles.

4. visit the EMPORIUM FOOD COURT

The range of food at the Emporium food court is amazing! We would highly recommend you visit here for lunch and try the best chilli dog ever from Jamie’s Burger stand. You can also head to the gourmet food market where you can try loads of tasters of just about anything!

5. explore thonglor

Thonglor is an up-and-coming area of Bangkok which again has amazing food options, you may notice a reoccurring theme that pretty much all of favourite spots involve food. The Commons is a really cool place with diverse cafes and eateries. The Mae Varee Fruit shop is also in this area where you can try delicious mango sticky rice. It’s a staple dish of Thailand and a must try when visiting.

6. shop until you drop at CHATUCHAK MARKET

The whole of this market is amazing. However, we would highly recommend the fashion section which is more like mini boutique stores than a market. It’s perfect for unique products and custom-made items. The Chatuchak market is actually the largest in Thailand so ask your driver to drop you at the fashion entrance.

7. experience terminal 21

Whilst Terminal 21’s stores aren’t as good as other malls in Bangkok, it’s interior can’t be beat. This mall is really cool as each floor is designed to double as a different city like Rome and San Francisco. It’s fun to explore each floor and take lots of photos.

8. visit a rooftop speakeasy

If a rooftop pool isn’t your thing then maybe a rooftop bar is. Again, there are many options of amazing sky bars in the city but we would recommend the Speakeasy rooftop bar at Hotel Muse. Located on the 25th floor of the hotel, the Speakeasy creates the perfect 1920’s atmosphere where you can enjoy delicious cocktails and watch the sunset.
