the location
The Inn is situated in John O’Groats, an iconic stop on the NC500 route at the very north of mainland Scotland. However, it’s bold colours and nordic styling will have you questioning if you are in the Faroe Islands or Norway. The colourful inn really does stand out from it’s surroundings in the Highlands, especially on a gloomy day.
the space
The Inn hosts self-catering apartments of different sizes to meet your needs. The Portknockie apartment is a huge space with a kitchen/living room area leading into a separate bedroom with en suite bathroom. The views from the windows are great and you can enjoy reading the plaques next to each window telling you what you might see from them. For example, a glimpse of the Northern Lights, the Orkney Islands on a clear day or rare Scottish birds. During your stay you also have access to a shared social area called the Harbour Library (shown below). You can get cosy by the log fire wrapped up in a tartan blanket and enjoy the views over the Harbour.
the sleep
The fact the bedroom is separate from the living area makes it feel like a little sanctuary. The contemporary and minimalistic nordic styling of the room makes it the perfect place to relax and unwind. Also the bed was extremely comfortable.
the food
The apartments are all self-catering. The kitchen is fully quipped with a cooker, microwave and oven. We would recommend bringing your own food to cook. There are also a few restaurants nearby and a Starbucks next door.
